The Columbia Gardens Enhancement Society is sponsoring a seminar, The Healing Power of Nature, on Wednesday, September 5, 7:00 pm at Christ Church Trinity. The evening will provide information on the therapeutic use of a Healing Garden and the science supporting holistic gardens.
Speakers:
Sonya Jakubec is a Registered Nurse and Community Health Researcher at Mount Royal University in Calgary. Sonya studies multiple interventions for community wellbeing across the lifespan. She works with collaborative teams across health and parks/recreation sectors as well as for street level and homeless advocacy in Calgary, across Alberta and pan-Canadian groups. This is a good fit for our valley and emphasis on outdoor pursuits, and with Legacy Trail and Cycling Without Age that also wish to enhance the lives of seniors and those with mobility issues.
Beth Gorchynski has a strong interest in creative aging, healthy aging and resiliency and is on the Board of the Creative Aging Society of Calgary, and is the Secretary for the Calgary Chapter of the Alberta Association on Gerontology. She is a member of the Calgary Dementia Network and is on several action teams in Calgary working to improve the quality of living for individuals with dementia.
Pat Bavin has been doing Feng Shui assessments of the garden site and will continue to give us guidance as the garden progresses.
Pat Luders will talk about the benefits of a labyrinth in the garden.
Elizabeth Shopland will speak to holistic living and gardens, and has been involved in assessing the needs and potential of COHO Healing Garden. Elizabeth is a Certified Corporate Facilitator and Coach, horticulturist and columnist.
I think we are very fortunate to have these people volunteer their time to bring this research and information to our community.
